That's it. That's what I got out of today's reading. Stupid, stupid Saul.
He KNEW better. He UNDERSTOOD what God had said. But instead of obeying, Saul decided that he wanted to look good in front of God AND in front of the Israelites. Stupid.
Are you stupid? Or, I should say, Are WE stupid? Do we know what God wants us to do? AYUP! Do we do it, AH-NOPE. We do things to look good in front of others, TO INCLUDE GOD...we go to church thinking God will like us more if we do so. How stupid are we? He doesn't care if we go to church to look good amongst others...He wants us to simply OBEY His commands. We all know what they are, beginning with the Ten Commandments found in Exodus and Deuteronomy, and concluding with what Jesus tells us to do in New Testament writings. We can also glean other 'interpreted commands' from Paul, Peter, John and others who contributed to writings included in our Bible. We KNOW what God wants us to do, but rarely do we do those commands. We are concentrating more on living for today instead of obeying for our next lives.
We find Saul in these chapters always at war. We are also....always at war, that is. We have to muster ourselves to fight battle after battle against the one who is trying to keep us from obeying God. Yes, Satan has that goal, as he knows that if we disobey God, then God will abandon us as quickly as He did Saul.
22 But Samuel replied: "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD ? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you as king."
To obey is better than sacrifice, wow. I look the part of a Christian. I act the part of a Christian. I go to church. I donate time and money. I do all that i can.
Honestly, like Sam said AH-NOPE. My heart is not in it. I try to look good for God and others daily. But i cant seem to hear Gods voice. It's because my heart is not right, like Samuel.
Also i read this in the devotional book. Can you tell me where the theme "Obedience is far better than sacrifice" is present throughout the bible. well actualy this would take you a long time to do so ill post the answer tomorrow night verse by verse. try and see what you come up with. and post the verses. it would be cool to see your responses. This is the verse that really got me thinkin today.
22 But Samuel replied:
"Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD ?
To obey is better than sacrifice,
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination,
and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the LORD,
he has rejected you as king."
