Now, here is one I hadn't noticed before....chapter 32, starting in verse 26, where Moses says to the people, "Whoever is for the Lord, come to me." After the Levites rallied to Moses, he commanded them to kill 'brother' and 'friend' and 'neighbor'. And they did so...they killed about 3000 of their own Israelite nation that day. Now< i wonder why that was done. Was moses tryiing to please God by taking revenge on the people for what they did? Did this please God? I just found it strange that Moses would command such a thing, after all, the Israelites were GOD's people.

Oh yeah, to Dustin...great you are reading the blog, and that you are reading the assignments YOU chose, but I am disappointed in the fact that you didn't get ANYTHING out of all the millions of thoughts found in this book, and also disappointed that you haven't taken the time to share with the rest of us your thoughts/questions. It appears to me that you need some borthers in your life to mentor you.....I haven't heard much lately about how great the church is out there....are thiings awaining? Are you too preoccupied with your life that God is no longer in the CENTER of it? I don't mean to appear harsh, but that is the duty of a fellow Christian--to question those who appear to be struggling. I think you may need some good old discipling (stuff the church did before you became a Christian). This discipling can be done with love and passion and caring, but may also bring along some arrows that may penetrate both your heart and your mind. Your idea for ALL of us to blog on a full reading of the Bible in 2010 is a great one, and I hope you increase your participation a bit for the rest of us to learn more about you.

ok to the 3000, first you have to look at other versions of the bible. you will find that moses says different things. In a different version at the end of verse 26 it reads "And all the sons of levi rallied to him". the sons of levi were Moses and Aaron SO all the levities that rallied were the sons of aaron and moses.
God at this point has said he would strick down these people if they traveled in to the land of milk and honey. So i dont believe that he had any anger towards moses for starting his Gods job for him.
So Moses asked the sons of levi to go house to house killing anyone who protested Gods word. Thats my take on that section.

I am not a patient man! I want God to act on my time line (which is right now). I get so frustrated with having to "wait" on God. I would have been in the group that reacted because I saw that "Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain."

When did Aaron turn bad? This is the Aaron who spoke for God to Pharaoh. This is the Aaron who saw first hand all of the miracles of God. This is the Aaron who must have heard God talking to Moses? He heard God's own voice! And here he is leading the people in making a golden calf. Not that I consider myself any better. I have many of the same characteristics as Aaron. I have witnessed God do great and awesome deeds in my life and still I doubt when something rocks my world. As I stated above, I have no patience. I have a very hard time seeing the "big picture." I want to have more and stronger faith.

I don't think Aaron 'turned bad'. I just think he was doing something FOR God. As God kept Himself hidden from the people, and would seem to only show Himself as of late to Moses, Aaron probably thought the best way to 'calm the crowd' was to give them an object which may have REPRESENTED God. I don't think any of the Israelites truly worshipped a golden creation by man, but what they thought it stood for. Maybe Gold and maybe a Calf were not the best objects to use to represent God, but what else did they have? Today, we have the cross. We don't WORSHIP the cross, per say, but a lot of us WEAR it. We treat our little silver/gold crosses with respect. And we know they REPRESENT God through Jesus' suffering. Maybe when Moses wrote this book (as he was given credit for having done so), he didn't understand that the people needed SOMETHING upon which to worship the God that had helped them through the worst of times.
How would "I" act if 'my God' was not accessible to me like He is today. We get to talk to Him in prayer, and 'listen' to Him through the Word and our consciences, but what did the Israelites have? Nada. Just a thought.

My laptop quit my computer ie down so I'm on my phone. How crazy is the first chapter! Aaron jumps ship rather quickly ,Moses seems to make his own punishment for the people. Moses tells God to take his name from the book for the peoples sin! In a word, that's crazy! We are all struggling with one thing or another. Do you honestly, at any time, not believe there is a all powerful God? We must rely on what we have learned as we cannot hear Gods voice, we do not speak to God and get a verbal response. Like Rich said, all the things we know are from God, health, family, where we live, no smoking for a year, as much as we take the credit, we know it is not us. I can do nothing without God, its just that simple. My life is a mess right now. I can't sing, pray,or think to long without becoming emotional. But, even though I missed a month of church, I always knew God was still with me even if I was not with Him. The Israelites, that's just plain crazy.

Don't be to hasty to blame the Israelites. Remember, probably NONE of them were literate at what we would consider a 6-th grade level. Remember, they were SLAVES for 430 years!!!

NOPE.....except, you must remember, MAN wrote this Bible. And as you can see, MAN created different VERSIONS, as well. God inspired? Yes. Error free? No.
