Rules, rules, and more rules. Why does man need rules? Well, let me answer that. Let's take the game of football, for an example. Let's say there were no rules. Well, first, there would be no scoring....after all, one of the rules of the game is to get the football into the 'end zone' or through the uprights. So, no scoring. Next, no offsides, holding, illegal formation or any of the other violations, as if you have no rules, you can't violate them. Then also, you'd not have relatively even teams, as each team now is comprised of a certain number of people and only a certain number can be on the field at any given time.
So, as you can see, without football rules, you'd not have football contests. Simple as that.

Now, let's assume God put down NO rules for man to follow. No punishment for stealing, killing, coveting.....you name it, no punishment for anything. Now that sounds good if you are the one doing these things, but let's say these things are being done TO you. YOU are maimed, you have something you own stolen. YOUR family is murdered. NOW how do you feel about rules? Yes, rules (laws, decrees, commands, whatever you call them) are absolutely necessary in the survival of mankind.

Now, are some of the rules God set down in these chapters 'right'? Do some seem unfair (treating slaves differently from slave owners), or do some seem not right? Probably. There are plenty in here, and you can pick and choose a bunch to ask questions about, and wonder why we don't have identical rules today, but regardless of their applicability to OUR lives, they are/were absolutely necessary. Over time, man has created his own set of rules, some based upon the ten commandments and the other laws God handed down, and some based upon changes in society. Take the way women and 'slaves' are now treated, versus the way they were in both the Old and New Testaments of our Bible. New finds, new revelations, new discoveries, have all created a need for new sets of rules. Has man always gotten these rules right? Heck no! But, we have to remember, if we think GOD didn't set down 'right' rules thousands of years ago, what do we think man will have done, or will do, with his own sets of rules.

Regardless if rules are right or wrong (I disagree with a lot of NFL rules (no touching the kicker the helmet of the quarterback, of illegal formations (what IS that anyway, as long as you have the proper number of men on the field, why can't you, as coach, decide where to place your men on the field????), etc)). But, rules they are, anyway. And they must be followed.

So, as you go about your day today, think of all the rules you abide by in your life. Think how many are stupid, but also think how many are absolutely necessary for you to live here on God's great earth.
