    What's a ransom?
I think of it as a demand of money for the return of something illegally obtained. SO, are the wicked illegally obtained, or are the righteous the ones who are? Or are the wicked the money, the cost, of the righteous. Hmmm...might be getting close with that last one. Does this verse mean that if one becomes wicked, it is at the cost of being righteous. Perhaps a true statement (last half), but unsure if this is what this verse means. Any insight?

NIV: 18 The wicked become a ransom for the righteous,
and the unfaithful for the upright
    .
NLT; 18 The wicked are punished in place of the godly,
and traitors in place of the honest.

Message; 18 What a bad person plots against the good, boomerangs, the plotter gets it in the end.

Amplified; 18The wicked become a ransom for the [uncompromisingly] righteous, and the treacherous for the upright [because the wicked themselves fall into the traps and pits they have dug for the good].

So many different versions, many different translations. NIV and the Amplified are hard to understand. The NLT and the Message make it obvious. The wicked verses the good and what comes around goes around.
It doesn't pay to be deceitful and dishonest, it will come back to you. Sometimes you (we) think, why is this happening to me, whatever the bad is. You (we) think, I do right, I stay out of trouble, I don't outright sin,yet still I (we) have all these troubles. Satan plays us, it's that simple. But...what goes around, comes around. The wicked and traitors, traitors to God, they will get their come upins. Lets just try and stay the course.
