I thought John quoted Jesus as saying that eveyone "may have life, and have it to the full." Hard to have a 'full life' and not enjoy pleasures. Maybe the key operative word here is 'love'. The Greek word used here in this verse, is not the phileo or agape love we read about in the NT, but is the word 'ahab (aw-hab'), which means to have affection for. I guess the amount of affection is key, and if we love pleasures more than wanting to help other people, then we may become poor, and never be rich.
Tha't my take on this. It is sorta like the comparison Jesus makes in the book of Luke about hating one's own mother and father and the love one should have for God. Extreme love of pleasures can certainly cuase one's ruin, wouldn't you say? Reply to this
