Why did God 'appear' to the Israelites and speak to them? To scare them into not sinning! So says verse 20 (paraphrased). Fear him, Moses says, as He is testing you to see if you are scared enough to stop any future sinning. Well, that didn't last long....if you read ahead in Exodus chapter 32, they went right back to sinning and even committed the VERY FIRST ONE God listed....have not other gods before Him...they worshipped a golden statue of a baby COW!!!!! Talk about stupid. Guess they weren't very scared, were they. Are you?
PS---as you know, if you remembered, this is the last chapter we will be blogging about this time in the book of Exodus. A lot of the next few chapters talk in great detail about articles in the tabernacle. We're going to move on to the mysterious book of Ecclesiastes. I really hope you all enjoy that one, and really get into to it and pull out a lot to share with everyone else.
To Rik---okay, so you are only at day 20. What improvements have you seen in yourself, your wife, your marriage? C'mon man, SHARE! Reply to this

This has been a great study. Most of the rest of Exodus is about the tabernacle, laws, the ark, etc. I am sure these are important at some level, but there are some other really good verses that struck me - especially in Exodus 32 and 33. Chapter 32 of course is the golden calf chapter. Aside from all the lessons there, it struck me that God was ready to make Moses in a great nation - just him (and his family I presume). God wanted to destroy the Israelites, but Moses 'reasoned' with Him and He relented. Amazing.
Also, in chapter 33, it talks about the relationship between Moses and God. Maybe I was wrong about the 'Me and God' song because it says that God spoke with Moses as a man speaks with a friend (verse 11). And in verse 17, it says "I am pleased with you and know you by name." There is great emotion in these verses. God had shown His strength, His miracles, His anger - now He is showing His love and compassion toward Moses - almost as if God needs relationships - very special - these verses and a few other show insight into a God who feels things very deeply because He cares very deeply. An elderly man was quite unhappy because he had lost his favorite hat. Instead of buying a new one, he decided he would go to church and swipe one out of the vestibule. When he got there, an usher intercepted him at the door and took him to a pew where he had to sit and listen to the entire sermon on "The Ten Commandments." After church, the man met the preacher in the vestibule doorway, shook his had vigorously, and told him "I want to thank you preacher for saving my soul today. I came to church to steal a hat and after hearing your sermon on the 10 Commandments, I decided against it." Preacher: "You mean the commandment 'I shall not steal' changed your mind?" Old Man: "No, the one about adultery did. As soon as you said that, I remember where I left my old hat!" Reply to this
