Okay, now I'm confused again. I had always heard that Abraham was about to sacrifice his ONLY son, Isaac. As a matter of a fact, that is what verse 2 in this chapter says. "thine only son Isaac" (KJV). What happened to Ishmael? You know, the kid Abram had with his wife's maid, Hagar? He is still alive at this juncture in Abraham's life. Why would the author refer to Isaac (and the story get relayed over centuries) as Abraham's only son. I guess it makes the sacrifice seem even more severe than it was. To have to sacrifice ANY of your children is beyond our Christian comprehension today. And to do so with ones ONLY child, I guess it makes the point a bit better...BUT, Isaac was NOT Abraham's only son....why would the author (transcribists and translatists) write it this way. And I hear tell the Bible is flawlessly God's Word. It is things like this that keep cropping up that tend me more to believe MAN put together this Bible more for man's purposes over the years, and may have infringed a bit on the true Word of God.
    Just a thought.

Mac, you can not pick and choose what you want to believe. The bible says that every word is God breathed and written by man. My thoughts on your question would be that Isaac was Abraham's only son from his wife, not from another women. Also, like you said, Ishmael and his mother were sent out to the desert, maybe he thought they were dead, or at least dead to him, and they would have been had not the Lord stepped in and saved them. We cannot explain everything but we must believe what the scriptures say. We should as you always say find other books, passages to back things up, but we still need to believe. I think they call that faith. There is NO possible way that we (man) can make a human out of dirt, yet God did it and we believe it happened.

Ah, but I disagree. You CAN pick and choose what you want to believe. And I believe the Bible has been mis-translated several times over the centuries.....take some time sometime and look at the history of the church and creation of the New Testament...how were specific LETTERS chosen to included/excluded, and even CHANGED!!! That's the glory of what God has done for us...he allows us to disagree, To research, To doubt, To have Faith, To choose. You really think every single living creature that breathes air today was on that ark????? Nah....I think several species evolved since then. Oh, I have faith, and I believe in Jesus as my savior and that He truly was/is part of God and was put on this earth for our salvation. But there are several things I sincerely doubt happened as described in our Bible which exists today. And, that being said, YOU also have the choice of believing what YOU want to....and I am super-glad you do.

Great sermon on Sunday about worshipping our God. 3rd in the 3-part series. Also, great time last night (only 5 of us) as we got into the second of six lessons on "God is closer than you think." We learned about different types of days" Rainbow, Ordinary, Don't Look at Me God, and Mystery days. Am trying to determine which type this day is turning out to be.
What was the sermon on Sunday at ACOC (or whatever they call that section now)?

    You headed outa town today?

"God tested Abraham, and said to him, take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac,". Take NOW your only son. Not, now take him and go, but, you had two sons NOW you only have one, as Ishmael had been sent away. I wonder what Isaac was doing this entire time that he was bound up, laid on the wood, and his father had a knife out to slay him? Do you think Isaac was as obedient to Abraham or do you think he was struggling a little? How are we to our parents, how are we to God? God tells us what to do daily, how often do we do what we know is right without arguing, either with ourselves because we don't want to do it even though we know we ought to or with someone else. Abraham and Isaac are a great example of obeying God.
