A friend in need, is a friend indeed. An old saying, coming from I don't know where. But I was reminded of it when I read this story in Chapter 19. First, Jonathan, David's friend and son of Saul, pleaded with his father not to kill David. It worked. Saul listened and even took an oath. But, later, after David had done even more good deeds for Saul's kingdom, Saul was intent upon killing David. This time, Michal, David's wife, also Jonathan's sister and daughter of Saul, saved David by sending him away and fooling Saul's men with a fake body in David's bed. Both times, these 'friends' of David saved his life. The next friend who appears in this story is Samuel, to whom David had fled after being warned by Michal. Samuel seems to take David under his wing again in order to protect him. It seems to work for awhile as (I am sure) Samuel's input resulted in Saul's men, as well as himself, coming under the power of God and even prophesied. A friend in need is a friend indeed. Who do YOU turn to when you are in need? Besides prayer, that is? Do you call a friend? Do you call anyone at all? I know a man who calls me everytime he needs a truck. He has few other friends (and obviously none with a truck). I used to get calls a lot from someone who wanted to pray about sin....haven't done that in a LONG time. I used to have a friend who was always bugging me to meet him on Saturday morning for prayer...not any more. A friend of mine used to meet regularly to help him understand the Bible....haven't done that for many, many months. Are YOUR friends taking a back seat in YOUR spiritual life, or are you pretty certain your level of spirituality is such you don't indeed need friends for that? Just a thought. Reply to this
