David and Goliath....great old story. Interesting enough, last Sunday's sermon included this story (The sermon was titled "The Giants of the Old Testament"--this week, NT). David, our preacher, not David, son of Jesse retold this story in great detail, including the difference in size of Saul and David---one reason David didn't want to wear the armor Saul gave him. Also, the book I am reading (and the series we are doing Sunday nights), If You Want to Walk---well, you know what it is by now) also has a great section about this story which I read yesterday on the airplane returning from VA. So, when I read this chapter this morning, I was pretty much 'ready' for it. We all know David had God on his side---that is why he triumphed that day. It was pretty obvious, however, that his brothers, who were on the battle lines, were not men of God. One of them, the oldest, even rebuked him for even asking about what was going on. Satan was obviously toying with Eliab. This goes to show that God can be with ONE family member, and not with others. We should keep this in mind. Maybe God is not with our wife, our children (or maybe even with us). Any given day, God may 'move away' for a bit and allow Satan to get into our family members' lives, and even ours as well. When we go for days without deep prayer discussions with God; when we go for days without filling up with(not just nibbling on) God's Word; when we ignore God and do things our way; when we don't confess sins to Him for a long period of time; when WE are away from HIM, Satan works his way in. How well ARE you doing anyway? Take this short self-test, and grade it as you see fit: On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most growth, how much are you presently growing in the following areas: Vcationally? Relationally? Intellectually? Spiritually? Your self-responses might awaken you to seeing how vulnerable you are to being attacked by Satan. The lower the number, more than likely you are not with God a whole lot--you're not feeding on His Word a lot, you're not confessing sins to Him much; you're not praying earnestly as much as you should. However, if you have a high number, you are more like David than Eliab and probably have God with you, like David did, most of the time. Interesting how in the last sentence (verse 58) that Saul asks who David was, yet in the previous chapter, verses 21-23, Saul knew David very well. Maybe these two verses actually occurred in time after David's victory over Goliath. Well, enough for now....have a great day! Reply to this
