Colossians 2 (and 3). Sorry for 'getting ahead', but I couldn't stop reading Colossians this morning.
Rules, Rule Rules. First, Paul talks about worldly rules and that 'they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence." WHAT? Sensual indulgence??? Let's try to figure this one out. Man made rules, such as many we are witnessing in other religions right now about women. Do not handle. Do not touch. Or in other words, distance yourselves from them (women). But we see that does not lessen the desires of men. As a matter of a fact, it probably increases them. Now, I want to get 'personal' here. Imagine a world with women in 'skimpy' clothes, covering up those 'private parts only', yet showing plenty to get mens' interests. Then, imagine a world with all women naked all the time. Which do you think would cause more 'sensual indulgence or desires'? Probably, in MY opinion, after a time, it would be the former, where mens' interests are teased. Who did I go there? I don't remember, BUT, ...oh yeah, now I do...rules. Mens rules don't necessarily decrease mens' desires to sin (sensual indulgence-whether it be sexually oriented or other ways of being pleased, such as wealth, fame and fortune). NO, mens' rules do not restrain feelings of indulgence. In chapter 3, Pauls tells about Christ's rules. Notice that these rules are permissive in nature, rather than restrictive. Read this chapter with that in mind, comparing mens' rules of 'stay off the grass' type instructions, vice Christ's rules to love others. Gotta go...see you at church or maybe the weekend of the 19th when I get back from travel...but, I am still on my cell phone and email.
