Daniel 1... Appears to be an interesting stroy, one we have heard before (the life of David), but I get by reading a chapter a day, and 'comparing notes', I bet we will learn a lot more about David (and ourselves). One thing I had not looked at before, was in verse 16, where it said he took away the choice food and wine...I always assumed when it said "gave THEM vegetable", that it was just talking about the four, Davind and his friends, SMA. As I re-read it, it looks like possibly he took away the palace food from everyone...why do I say this? Well, David and SMA already had that food taken (voluntarily) away from them, so the guard, when seeing how much better they (David and SMA) looked, that he took it away from THEM, meaning all the young men. Of course, this is all conjecture on my part, and probably absolutely of no importance, but let's just say that is the way it was. What would have been the reaction of the other young men? Probably resentment....who wants to eat just pulse instead of meat and wine? AHA..gotcha didn't I? PULSE?????? What are you talking about? Well, in the KJV it talks about 'pulse' vice 'vegetables'. Didn't sound right to me, so I looked it up in Websters. I found out that the MAIN, PRIMARY definition of PULSE is "the edible seeds of various crops (as peas, beans, or lentils) of the legume family". The secondary definition is referring to the pulminary system. Just thought I'd throw that in....I learned something new today, so that is a good thing. My favorite pulse is black beans. Anyway, back to the 'story'. I can imagine the resentment that David and SMA had to live with if that was the case. Have you ever made an unpopular decision? Yet one you knew was the correct one? I am sure you have, for example, you decided to follow Jesus as a Christian. Definitely unpopular in most of the world, and the way we are to act as Christians, truly act, is also unpopular within our own society. I was counselling an individual who works for me on Friday for many reasons which were reported to me by our customer. One complaint the customer had was the use of vulgar language by this individual. He denied using vulgar language, yet during my counselling session he used two 'vulgar' terms...vulgar to me as a Christian, but almost everyday language in the military environment. I told him I considered myself a Christian and those terms he used were definitely vulgar, and I would have to side with the customer on that complaint. It was an unpopular decision, that is to avoid those type terms, yet I do avoid them. Sometimes I am looked on as 'squeaky clean' because of it, but stand my ground I do. I like the way David stood his ground against an popluar decision (meat and wine) and decided to choose the unpopular one. Regardless if my conjecture was correct or not at the beginning of this, David and SMA chose an unpopular decision and stuck to it, proving his worth. We need to do the same all the time!!!
