Reading a second time is interesting. I was thinking this morning that this is the last day of Jesus' life on earth. The writer knows that he is about to be crucified - the most important event is about to happen. It seems to me that everything written here was probably well thought out and written for a purpose. The fact that such a significant part of the gospel of Mark is devoted to this last 24+ hour period supports this idea.
If I am correct, then I wonder. Why is the story of the woman pouring perfume over Jesus' head so very important? In fact, so important that Jesus says that her act will be told throughout the world. I do not know if I have ever heard anyone specifically preach about this. It is in the Bible, so it is part of the gospel, but why is it there? What is the specific meaning of her act? I am inclined to think it is more than just she did it. Was she one of the few people who actually listened to Jesus and so knew what was about to happen? I don't know. Anyone have any insight to help me here?
I also wonder why it is so important that the Peter, James and John were sleeping while Jesus prayed on Gethsemane. We oftne talk about the fact that they could not stay awake when Jesus needed them most. Maybe that is part of it. Even his closest friends were not there for him when he needed them. And if so, why were they so clueless? Did they not see the concern in Jesus and hear the anguish in his prayers? They apparently heard him - how else would Mark know what Jesus prayed? Did this not sound any different? Didn't any of them (especially Peter) ask? Again, I am just curious why their sleeping (3 times) is so important.
Then what about the guy who ran away naked? It is almost funny, but the situation is certainly not funny. And who was this young man?
Off to soccer. Will think about this more on the fields today. Hopefully will write more later today. Reply to this

Step-by-step....we see this methodical process as Jesus prepares for his ultimate goal: Annointed, last meal, death prediction, praying, arrested, questioned and condemned. How strong was he to have handled this in the way he did!!!! Never once waivered, except maybe in the garden during his prayer, he steadfastly looked ahead at his goal. From the annointing, to the way he handled the grilling questions, Jesus was strong, steadfast and determined. Those are three characteristics I wish I had. I would love to be strong among men, not in the physical sense as much as in the confidence sense. Like the cop in American Gangster I saw last evening, I get nervous when speaking to crowds...and yet there is absolutely no reason for it. I am not strong, but wish I were. I wish I were steadfast in reaching goals. Unfortunately, I start too many things and don't complete enough....I think that is due to my selfishness and greed. Many times I don't complete projects or simple tasks around the house and family simply because I get sidetracked and am not steadfastly concentrating on getting them done. This leads for sloppiness in my life. And how about being determined? I start off determined to do something a lot, but get waylayed in some manner most of the time. I am a procrastinator at not getting things done when needed. My determination for larger tasks and projects, once started, usually wanes. I am determined to do a lot of things, but I don't do them. I need your prayers to be a little more like Jesus as he had all three of these charactistics in him, and mine are just not there. Thanks in advance for those prayers. Reply to this

Back to Rich..... THE woman with the perfume...I ifind it interesting that this woman is not named in this book of Mark's, yet Jesus said she would be remembered forever. Mark forgot her name? There are other accounts of this event in the Gospels. The book of John names one who annoints Jesus, but at his feet, not his head, as Mary. Is she the one Jesus says to always remember? I think maybe. Luke says that the (an) annointing took place at the house of Simon, who was a Pharisee, yet Mark calls his Simon, a Leper. I guess it is possible that a Leper could be a Pharisee, but if so, why didn't Mark mention this 'unique' fact? Is Mary, if this is 'the woman' in Mark, Mary Magdeleine who WAS known as a sinner? Does that mean Mary M was then Lazarus' and Martha's sister? With the names of Mary and Simon being so common, it is hard to figure this one out. If you take some time to compare all accounts of 'the annointing of Jesus' in the Gospels, you too will come up with questions as to whether all accounts are just retold of one account. However you look at this, though, there are several lessons, I believe, you can take from it. Annointing was a practice of preparing a body for burial...this event seems to be, to me that is, a symbol of that event as Mary must have known Jesus' fate (strange how woman have this sense of intuition we dull men don't). In addition to showing her love for Jesus in this manner, she obviously didn't care about money and wealth, unlike the greedy disciples (one of the Gospels says the one who complained was the treasurer of the group, Judas Iscariot). So, I see a couple of great lessons already from this event: Women's spirituality is oft times better than man's because of their intuition, and men are greedy. Not to say women are not, but when we think about men of the world, vice women (yes, women can be vices-- ), we tend to see greed more prevalent. Just look at men from all different nations of the world right now...who do you see in the news the most often in big corporations who have CEOs and others on trial for curruption...men. And who do we see leading most 'corrupt' nations? Men. OUR job, is to try to reduce our own greed, pay attention to more of our 'feelings' like women do, and I bet Jesus would be more proud of us and might even speak as well of us as he did of this woman.
