Prov 26. Remember our discussion of the seemingly contradictory passages about answering a fool (vs 4 & 5)? Well, I did the fatal no-no---I looked it up on the internet to see what other people had to say. One really made sense. Here it is:
On the surface, taken literally, these appear as contradictory commands. But what we must understand is that for many if not most of the proverbs there are two principles which describe the sense in which they are written which resolves such paradoxes.
Principle #1: Many of the apparent commands are to be taken not as explicit commands but rather as principles - IF A THEN B.

Principle #2: Most of the proverbs are GENERAL principles as opposed to things which are true in every particular case. Thus most should be understood to be preceeded with the expression "Generally speaking".

So for example in the cases above we would say

"Generally speaking if you answer a fool according to his folly then you will be like him, but on the other hand you will prevent him from being wise in his own eyes."
    Makes sense to me....you?

Acts 26. Verses 28 and 29 which talk about Festus questioning Paul about him being able to convert him in such a short time, and Pauls' answer, 'Short time or long...", reminds me of Mike, my son-in-law. For years he was totally against God, probably even hating what we and his wife were doing as Christians. But, with prayer, not short time, but long, he eventually came to Christ. He has his own story of conversion, and maybe some day you other guys will get a chance to listen to it like Festus did to Paul. Thank God for the Holy Spirit---He got another great soul in Michael Gray.

Sounds like someone who desparately wanted to make sure the scriptures did not contradict themselves so he came up with that mumbo jumbo- "generally speaking". I think our understanding makes much more sence. tie it in with ecl. chapter 3- there is a time for everything. thus there is a time to answer a fool in his folly and there is a time not to.

fools and sluggards- 3 months ago when we first started this exersize these type of scriptures hit kinda close to home. now, one the other hand, they seem to tell me to watchout for such people. this is growth! reading this stuff actually works, imagine that.

like i mentioned yesterday acts was to exciting to stop at 25 so I read 26 also. Paul was a awesome man.
